We understand the importance and joy of owning an obedient dog. For one, well-mannered dogs are simply a pleasure to have. They are most often treated with more care and attention than dogs without a lot of training. We also realize how time consuming and sometimes challenging training a dog can be. Owners who lack the time and skill to properly train their dog may need help in achieving this goal. This is the reason dog owners turn to a board and train facility. However, the problems with certain board and train services are the methods most commonly used. One of the things that make DogBoy’s Board and Train Program so different from others is the lack of methods you will find in most facilities.
So, what else makes DogBoy’s different from other Board and Train facilities?
- At NO TIME will your dog be presented with a choke chain, prong collar, electric collar, or any form of intimidation or force during his/her training process while staying at DogBoy’s. It’s not that these compulsive training methods are ineffective, quite the opposite really. But, the long term behavioral issues that arise from using these types of methods are what make them detrimental to your dog. That is why we strictly use reward-based methods in the form of food, toys, and praise and why training sessions are handled at your dog’s learning pace rather than forced beyond what your dog can handle at any given time. Keep in mind that it is normal for dogs to take “one step forward, two steps back” during the training process. This is not a bad thing and simply means the dog is going through a rebellion of sorts.
- Each dog is under the tutelage of a Certified Professional Dog Trainer. More than one trainer will work with your dog to insure that each behavior is generalized and not strictly applied to only one person. This also includes working with your dog in variety of settings and distractions.
- We also offer dog-to-dog play for boarders and daycare attendants. If your dog is eligible and the trainer approves, he/she will have the chance to socialize and mingle with other compatible dogs.
- Owners are also welcome to observe any and all training sessions to determine the progress of his/her dog. At the end of their dog’s board and train stay, owners receive individual guidance to instruct him/her on how to maintain the behaviors at home and in public.
It is very important that each owner knows their role in the board and train process. This is a partnership between you, your dog, and DogBoy’s and everyone has a responsibility in the process. Owners must be willing to continue maintenance at home or the behaviors will not stick. We want you to be comfortable and well-suited in sustaining your dog’s behavior at home.
Our goal is to help you achieve an enjoyable member of the family and society.
Other considerations when thinking about a Board and Train program:
- What is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT)?
Certified Professional Dog Trainers (CPDTs) have voluntarily tested and proven a level of competency and knowledge of dog behavior, learning theory and educational requirements, as well as adhere to a Code of Ethics set forth by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. At DogBoy's, we have five CPDTs on staff who are also Professional Members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
