Shay PoznichShay Poznich
Kennel Manager

Shay is another one of our customers turned employee. She learned about DogBoy’s after adopting her Terrier mix, Hazel, through Lucky Mutts Rescue. When they recommended us for daycare and boarding, Shay thought that would be a great way to socialize and exercise Hazel on days that she couldn’t. She and her family soon adopted another dog through rescue and, Vincent, an all around Heinz 57, began coming to daycare as well.

Shay was so impressed by DogBoy’s and it’s staff that she inquired about a job, feeling that this would be a great place to work and learn about dog behavior. To try it out, she first volunteered in the kennel for a few months and, liked it so much, decided she wanted the job! We were delighted to hire her and she has been an enormous asset to the DogBoy’s team. We love that Shay decided to be a part of our gang! After working in our kennel and then as our Training Center Coordinator, Shay now heads up our staff as Kennel Manager.

Customer turned Employee, dog loverJon Campbell
Marketing Coordinator

Jon discovered DogBoy’s about 10 years ago when he and his wife, Stacy, had their first child. The demand to visit family in Kansas was high. Their dog, a then 12-year-old Doberman named Rosa, was too old to travel that far, and Jon finally had to relent and board her for only the second time in her life. He picked up Rosa 10 days later and found her curled up on a bed in front of the office fireplace, and he knew he’d found a special place.  Since then, Jon and his dogs have taken many classes at DogBoy’s and his dogs have been regulars at daycare.  And he still won't board his dog anywhere else.

Jon has had dogs, usually Dobermans, in his life since he was 8, but has always yearned to learn about dogs and their behavior in packs. Jon worked in publishing for several years, then escaped his office to become a stay-at-home dad when he and Stacy had their second son. As the youngest began part-time preschool, Jon began looking for his next ‘real job.’ He jumped at the chance to work part-time in the kennel, and hopes to spend the rest of his working life around dogs. “I marvel at what I learn every time I work a shift,” he says.

Jon, Stacy, and their children Peyton, and Beau share their home with Calvin the cat and a sweet lab mix named Winnie. In late April of 2014, Jon had to say goodbye to his young Dobie named Guinness. They were quite the pair and it was evident to anyone who knew him that Guinness had a very special connection with Jon. In his down time Jon can usually be found doing laundry, but when that’s finally done, he loves to read books on his e-reader and fly fish the Hill Country from his kayak.

Ferrell JacksonFerrell Jackson
Receptionist

Ferrell joined the DogBoy’s team in the summer of 2012, after returning to the area from a 7 year stint in Colorado. She was born and raised in the Austin area and began hearing about DogBoy’s as far back as high school, when her best friends began to work here. Living in the very dog-friendly state of Colorado really developed Ferrell’s love of our canine friends and helped to steer her toward adopting her own pup named, Elsie, upon her return to Austin. You’ll find her at the front desk of DogBoy’s where she loves to answer questions and to help you and your dog get checked in and out for doggy daycare or boarding! When she’s not answering phones or chatting with customers in the office, you’ll find her planting gardens and obsessing over her flowers at home.

Shea Tucker
Receptionist

Shea & Gunner

Shea’s interest in dogs began at an early age with her grandparent’s farm dogs. It wasn’t until she was 9 years old and she received her first dog, a 10 week old Border Collie/Cavalier King Charles mix, named Ladybug that her interest blossomed into a full-blown love affair. When she was just 13 years old, Shea started competing in low level Agility competitions with Lady until her retirement in 2010 at 9 years old.

On her 16th birthday, Shea received a Border Collie puppy named Tyko. He quickly became more like a little brother than a dog, and the apple of her parent’s eyes. In 2011, she received a phone call from her brother about a puppy in need of a home and she welcomed a German Shepherd named Gunner into her life. They have been absolutely inseparable ever since. To add to the zoo at home, Shea has two cats Stormy and Sebastian, as well as an American Paint horse gelding named Ethan, who she competes in shows with on the weekends.

After working for a specialty veterinary hospital for a year as a kennel technician, Shea felt it was time to find a different work environment in which she could still be around dogs. After coming across DogBoy’s in her search and learning about their love of dogs, she felt it was the perfect fit for her and her pups to call home.

Kate Van der VoortKate Van der Voort
Receptionist

Kate has been working at DogBoy's since April of 2007, after being a customer here for over a year. Kate hails from Pittsburgh, PA, and she came to Austin in 2005 after a stint in Monterey, CA. Kate adopted her first dog, a Catahoula mix named Ralphie, from a shelter in California. She found Max, a Corgi/Shepherd mix, through a local rescue group here in Texas.

As a customer, Kate felt so lucky to find DogBoy's and the staff here, who have always been so supportive and helpful with both of her special needs dogs. Kate has worked in the kennel, coordinated for the training department, and managed our office staff. Currently, she's working back at the front desk while she pursues her Masters degree in counseling. You may also catch her playing the marimba with the Rattletree School of Marimba at various events around town.

Shala JohnsonShala Johnson
Pet Care Technician

Shala has come to DogBoy's Dog Ranch in January 2015, with a background in Business Management and Finance.  She is excited to step away from the desk to pursue her passion for dogs.

As a child, Shala loved spending quality time with her Black Lab, teaching her all the tricks she could.  Her current dogs, a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix and a French Bulldog, are eagerly and patiently earning treats via clicker training, as Shala is a new student to the topic.

Fueled by a desire to help others reach their potential and attain their goals, Shala also has recently wrapped up a career working with children, ages two through nine, in the education setting where she brought her sports business to various preschools and elementary schools as an enrichment program offering.  The business was a franchise focused around a detailed specialized sports curriculum scientifically researched to help children, at specific ages, reach critical landmarks in cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development.

Although Shala loves to work with children, she still has had an ongoing burning desire to do the same with dogs, with the ultimate goal of becoming a trainer of guide dogs.  Her hope is to one day train a guide dog for her sister who is deaf and legally blind, due to Usher syndrome type I.  Shala's sister does not share her appreciation for dogs and their ability to enrich people's lives, but that is not stopping Shala from holding out hope that one day she will be able to present to her sister the gift of a guide dog that is the right fit to enable her to experience higher levels of freedom, safety, and quality of life than what is possible without the assistance of a guide dog.

In the mean time, Shala is enjoying being a full-time student of dog behavior while working as a pet care tech at DogBoy's and reading books on the subject in her spare time.  She is eagerly embracing her opportunity to work with the people and canines of DogBoy's and loves the family feel that DogBoy and DogGirl have created at the Dog Ranch.

Mason Emken
Pet Care Technician

Mason EmkenMason was born on the Ranch – well, not literally. The first born son of DogBoy & DogGirl, Mason was born just months before the first kennel was built, so loving dogs has always been a part of his life. At one point, there were six dogs in his household! Currently Mason’s home has two dogs, a Dane/Lab mix named Rebel, who was dumped on Crystal Bend, and a 10 lb. Chiweenie named Noodle, who wandered his way down from the neighboring trailer park. Mason will be traveling this summer across the US with Drum Corps of America, and spends the school years at Texas Lutheran University, studying Music Education.
