Scratch that Itch

That's right, dog lovers, it's flea and tick season! That means before you bring Fido out to run and play, please make sure he's been treated for fleas and ticks. So what's the safest and most effective treatment?

In our humble opinion, Frontline Plus is the only topical treatment that safely works against many kinds of ticks and fleas. Revolution is only effective against one kind of tick and anecdotal evidence says it doesn't work as well against fleas. Advantage works well against fleas, but not at all against ticks. DogBoy's doesn't reccommend over the counter flea contol due to possible side effects.

If your dog comes in to DogBoy's with fleas, we will bathe, treat & charge you on pickup, so let's not let that happen! Because we are in the country, we DO get ticks out here, so the more proactive you are about preventing them, the better off your dog will be. Help us help your pets stay flea & tick free this summer. They'll thank you for it!

 Still Time to Say Cheese!

Come on, give us a smile!

There is still time to reserve a spot to have your pet's photo taken by Patty Mora, pet photographer. Patty will be coming out to shoot portraits of your pooch on Saturday, May 18th from 10-2. If you can't decide, we also want to you to know that walk-ins will be welcome. http://www.artcorestudio.com/.

For those of you who can't make it this weekend, we will be featuring another pet photographer next month. Watch your poopsheet for details!

A Walk in the Park

It was a cool February day, and the DogBoy family was visiting relatives in Houston. We decided (thanks to Grandma) that we should take the kids and their cousin to the park. Grandma packed lunches and we headed out. After a little playing, swinging and sliding, DogBoy and son went to rest at the picnic table.

I looked over at the table to see Bart being greeted by a dog. "Wouldn't you know it," I thought, "those dogs follow us everywhere!" I walked over to give Bart a hard time, the dog magnet that he is and found him crying. "What's the matter?" I asked. "Look at the dog!" he said hopelessly. I looked down to find the worst case of neglect I had ever seen. This poor little guy was starving to death, covered in mange, and ready to die.

Too Sad to Leave

After much thought, and a vet visit, we decided to bring him home and nurse him back to health. He weighed only 18 lbs. He would have soon died in those 30 degree nights, yet all of his ailments were treatable. We named him Park, and he is such a sweet boy. Just three months later, he is a 36 lb. happy, healthy pup ready to romp and play.

Did you say play?

I realized recently that most of you don't know that other dogs like Park live here at DogBoy's too. No, we're NOT a rescue group. And don't even THINK about calling us to rehome your dog, but there are always dogs here who need homes. Want to meet them? Come by or click here to see the other dogs at DogBoy's who need a good loving home.

DogBoy's Customers Help Break World Record
We did it! The Mighty Texas Dog Walk was a smashing sucess, and we broke the Guinness World Record for the most dogs walked in a single event with 3,117 dogs!

The old record was 2,872 dogs, and our customers made up at least 150 of the 3,117 dogs walked. So we really made a difference in the grand scheme of things.

We had a blast saying hi and seeing you all in those great green shirts. What an impression we made on the crowd. Thanks for coming and showing your support!

DogBoys makes Contact
We wanted to share some fun with you. DogBoy's has sponsored a t-ball team this summer with the Pflugerville Little League. The team ironically is called the Rivercats, but the team shirts say DogBoy's Kennels on the back.

We went to a game this month & saw the team work their tails off hitting balls and running bases. The only girl on the team made the first home run! One of Mason (DogBoy Jr.)'s friends is on the team too, so it was a special treat for all of us.

Our hope is to come back to another game before the season lets out and take these kids out for pizza or ice cream. I doubt they'd go for dog treats!

Let's Eat!

Here at DogBoy's, we feed your dog in the evening once per day unless you ask us to do otherwise. We agree that puppies under one year, or dogs on some twice-daily medications need to be fed twice a day. But normal, healthy dogs can easily eat once a day while they're here, even if they are used to eating twice a day at home.

Cedar doesn't have Bloat,
Did someone say dinner?
he's just fond of eating...

After consulting an expert on bloat, a torsion of the stomach which can cause death in dogs, we thought we might share with you some of what we learned and how it can be affected by when a dog eats. Most dogs who suffer from bloat are either anxious or nervous dogs, dogs who are large chested like Great Danes, Greyhounds, Boxers, or dogs who eat a big meal and THEN go exercise. Heat is not known to be a proven factor in bloat, so we are watching for it year round. But because of what we now know about the potential dangers of bloat from eating prior to exercise, we have decided to keep all morning feeders inside the kennel to rest for two hours after their meal. So, if you want your little buddy to get as much playtime as possible, let us feed him once a day (i.e. 4 cups in the pm vs. 2 cups twice/day), and we promise that Fido won't go hungry!
